When Mary, a dedicated volunteer at West Valley Medical Center, was diagnosed with breast cancer, she found herself facing a whirlwind of emotions. But one unexpected gesture helped lift her spirits during a difficult time: The Pink Angel Bag, part of West Valley's Pink Angel Project.

“I was overwhelmed and uncertain when I received the diagnosis,” Mary shared. “When Lorene and Kathy presented me with the Pink Angel Bag, I felt so special and loved. It was exactly what I needed in that moment. It was like a comforting hug from the community and the hospital.”

The Pink Angel Bag is carefully curated by a group of volunteers for women who have just learned they have breast cancer. Each bag is filled with comforting items like a crocheted shawl, a calendar with daily devotionals, a pen, a notepad, and more — items that help bring a sense of peace and strength to women during their cancer journey.

Mary was especially moved by the crocheted shawl, which she describes as an incredibly personal and warming gift. “That shawl was something I could hold onto, both literally and figuratively. It brought me comfort, knowing that people cared.”

Prior to her own diagnosis, Mary had already heard of the Pink Angel Project. She knew the bags were a symbol of love and support for women facing breast cancer. “The name 'Pink Angel' is so fitting,” Mary said. “It’s exactly how I felt when I received it — like an angel was looking out for me. It made me feel hopeful, like I wasn’t alone in this journey.”

Mary’s care at West Valley Medical Center further reinforced that sense of support. “The care I received was exceptional,” she said. “It’s not just a hospital — it’s like family. My surgeon, Dr. Whitney Parnell, was incredible. She was professional, compassionate, and made me feel at ease. The nurses were amazing, too. They were so attentive and caring. I felt like I was in the best hands.”

For Mary, the experience at West Valley was a reminder of the importance of both community and excellent healthcare. “I recommend West Valley to everyone,” she said. “I know they will take excellent care of me, no matter what.”

In addition to her personal experience, Mary encourages other women to stay proactive about their health. “I strongly recommend that all women stay current on their mammograms,” she urged. “Early detection is key, and it can make all the difference.”

With the Pink Angel Project, West Valley continues to offer not just medical care but also emotional support to patients battling breast cancer, helping them feel loved, cared for, and supported every step of the way.
