Orthopedic care

Orthopedists are doctors who take care of the entire musculoskeletal system. They diagnose and treat conditions such as sprains, strains, broken bones, arthritis and osteoporosis. Some of the treatments they offer include recommending lifestyle changes, applying casts and performing surgeries, such as ligament repairs or total joint replacements.

Hand, wrist and elbow treatment

Simple activities such as writing a letter, opening a bottle or buttoning a shirt can become challenging if you have a debilitating hand, wrist or elbow condition. With our advanced diagnostics, treatments and follow-up care, we aim to give you relief and a quick recovery.

As well as performing surgery and other upper extremity treatments, we work with our physical rehabilitation team to help you regain lost movement and functional ability.

Joint care

Using minimally invasive surgery whenever possible, our surgeons and support staff are committed to applying the latest techniques to care for a wide range of joint conditions, including:

  • Avascular necrosis (AVN) — This painful condition may result from chronic steroid use, a severe fracture, sickle cell disease (SCD) or heavy alcohol use. Also called osteonecrosis, this arises when the blood supply to the bone is disturbed, causing the bone cells to die.
  • Hip fracture — When a broken hip occurs from falling or blunt trauma, it can be extremely painful and lead to life-threatening complications. This injury requires immediate emergency care.
  • Impingement and rotator cuff tears — Shoulder impingement is the repetitive compression and overuse of the tendons in the shoulder, causing pain and tears of the rotator cuff.
  • Osteoarthritis — Also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), this is an age-related form of arthritis where the articular cartilage that protects the joint wears away over time. It results in the bones rubbing against each other, causing pain and limiting movement.
  • Osteoporotic fracture — This is a thinning and weakening of the bone caused by osteoporosis, which can lead to fractures.
  • Post-traumatic arthritis — After a fracture or tendon tear in the joint, damaged cartilage may cause pain and limit functional ability.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis — Regarded as the most common form of chronic inflammatory arthritis, this condition causes the body's immune system to attack its own tissue and joints. They become irritated and thickened, leading to cartilage loss, pain and stiffness.
  • Rotator cuff arthropathy — Over time, a rotator cuff tear can cause changes in the shoulder joint, leading to arthritis and deterioration of cartilage.

Hip and knee replacement

When chronic discomfort interferes with daily activities and more conservative therapies have proven insufficient, you may choose to proceed with total knee or hip replacement surgery. We also perform hemiarthroplasty (hip resurfacing), which is a surgery that resurfaces the damaged hip socket with an artificial joint.

Hip health assessment

Hip discomfort can impact many areas of your life. We offer a hip health risk assessment to help you get started on a path to recovery and wellness.

Knee health assessment

If you're experiencing chronic issues with your knee joint, you may consider seeking treatment. Our knee health risk assessment can help you determine your next steps.

Shoulder replacement

While shoulder pain is very common, it should be addressed quickly by a physician, as it can travel to other parts of the body, including the elbow and neck.

Together, we work with you to find a shoulder treatment that provides long-lasting relief. Our surgeons and physical therapists will personalize a treatment plan that aims to get you back to your desired lifestyle. We perform a variety of shoulder procedures, including:

  • Anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) — The ball in your upper arm bone (humerus) is replaced with a prosthetic metal implant and attached to a stem, recreating the humerus. The joint is then resurfaced with a plastic socket and attached to the shoulder blade. These implants form the normal anatomy of the shoulder joint, providing pain relief, while restoring function and mobility.
  • Shoulder resurfacing — This surgery resurfaces the damaged humeral head with an artificial joint, leaving the socket in its original form.
  • Total reverse shoulder replacement (R-TSR) — This is the preferred option when the rotator cuff doesn't function properly because of a previous injury or deficiency. With the reverse shoulder prosthesis, the ball portion is attached to the shoulder blade and the socket is placed at the upper end of the upper arm. This allows the arm to function without the rotator cuff.
