As West Valley Medical Center celebrates its 75th anniversary, we are reflecting on the legacy of healing, service, and connections that have shaped our story. Volunteer chaplain, Eric, who first stepped into the hospital decades ago — not as a chaplain, but as a teen volunteer, is an example of our legacy.

From teen volunteer to chaplain

“In the fall of 1976, my best friend and I joined the teen volunteer program as high school freshmen,” Eric recalls. “We did our shifts together, along with several classmates. I have lots of fond memories from those days.”

Years later, after retirement, he was searching for meaningful ministry opportunities. That’s when a familiar name — his classmate, Lorene Oates, now head of Volunteer Services at West Valley - suggested the chaplain program.

“It’s very gratifying,” he says. “I love meeting and visiting people, praying with them, and being available to answer spiritual questions. Having roots in this community, I often run into old friends, acquaintances, and local pastors. I’ve even had opportunities to use the Spanish I’ve been learning.”

A family legacy of service

Eric’s connection to West Valley runs deep.

  • His mother volunteered in the 1980s as part of the hospital auxiliary.
  • His wife’s father was a longtime Caldwell pediatrician, and she also volunteered at West Valley, where she continues to serve on the scholarship committee.
  • Their daughter was a teen volunteer and is now a nurse practitioner.
  • A nephew also volunteered here and is now a physician.

“Many of my childhood friends were children of medical professionals tied to West Valley — or its predecessor, Caldwell Memorial. It always felt like family,” Eric shares.

What makes West Valley special

When asked what stands out about West Valley today, Eric’s answer is clear — personalized care.

“I hear this often from patients, and I see it every day in the nurses, medical staff, and even the food service team. This is a place that feels personal, not like a big institution, and I love being part of it.”

Honoring a legacy, looking ahead

As West Valley celebrates 75 years of caring for the community, Eric’s reflections capture the heart of our mission.

“I’m happy to have experienced West Valley and Caldwell Memorial firsthand through the years,” he says. “And I’m grateful to still be part of the team today.”
