Pet Therapy Program

Volunteer Services

Pet Therapy is a program designed to “share smiles and joy.” Visits from the special dogs of the program provide cheer, brighten a stressful day and help relax patients, visitors and staff alike. Each dog/handler is required to visit the hospital at least once a month and attend two canine socializations. The program provides visits Monday and Wednesday evenings, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and Saturday mornings.

All Dog Breeds Welcome

The dogs visit the Medical/Surgical floor and other floors on a rotating basis. During visitations, dogs should be clean and dry; neat; friendly; and ready to socialize with patients, visitors and staff. All breeds are welcome, but they must:

  • Be at least one year of age
  • Have all vaccinations current
  • Know and obey basic obedience commands

All dogs in West Valley Medical Center's Pet Therapy Program must be registered with Therapy Dogs Incorporated (TDInc.) (www.therapydogs.com). TDInc. is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization with more than 6500 members across North America. TDInc. provides registration, support and insurance for members that are involved in animal-assisted activities. There is an annual $25 TDInc. registration fee.

Requirements For Handlers

Pet Therapy handlers for WVMC must be at least 18 years old and have completed training as a WVMC volunteer.  Becoming a volunteer requires completing a volunteer application and background check, attending a hospital orientation course and satisfying the health testing requirements. Handlers need to be personable and engaging in conversations while monitoring conditions of the visit.
