Ranked No. 1 in Idaho for General Surgery
Caldwell hospital also receives highest honor for Cholecystecomy, according to HealthGrades
West Valley Medical Center is the 2012 No. 1 hospital in Idaho for General Surgery, according to a report released by HealthGrades, considered by many the nation’s most trusted, independent source of physician information and hospital quality outcomes.
The Caldwell hospital received 5 stars, the highest honor, for Cholecystectomy, or surgical removal of the gallbladder. WVMC is ranked No. 5 in the state for GI services, according to HealthGrades, which received more than 6 million visitors to its website between January and June this year. You can visit the site at www.healthgrades.com.
“Our patients benefit from the highly trained physicians and patient-focused staff who are part of the West Valley Medical Center community,” WVMC CEO Julie Taylor said. “We’re extremely honored to accept HealthGrades’ rankings. This recognition is reflective of the hard work, commitment to quality and collaborative approach of our physicians and patient care providers.”
“Canyon County residents can rest assured they will receive the highest level of quality right in their community when they choose West Valley for health care services,” Taylor said.
HealthGrades’ report found that patients treated at 5-star rated hospitals experience a 73 percent lower risk of mortality and a 63 percent lower risk of complications. The HealthGrades 2011 Consumerism and Hospital Quality in America report and quality ratings measure the nation’s nearly 5,000 hospitals that treat Medicare patients.
Behind the report
Unlike other hospital quality studies, HealthGrades evaluated hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications. Hospitals cannot opt in or out of being rated. HealthGrades analyzed approximately 40 million Medicare discharges from almost every U.S. hospital from 2008 through 2010.
Hospitals that are 5-star rated have risk adjusted mortality or complication rates that are among the lowest in the country.
